How Careers Work

The basics before you pick a track

Your Sim finds a job by reading the newspaper or checking the computer. One career appears each day – if it’s not the one you want, check again tomorrow. Once hired, your Sim enters at level 1 and works their way up through 10 levels by building skills and making friends.

Each promotion requires a combination of skill points (Cooking, Mechanical, Charisma, Body, Logic, Creativity) and family friends – Sims outside your household who are friends with anyone in your family. Your Sim also needs to leave for work in a decent mood, so keeping needs topped up before the carpool arrives matters just as much as raw skill.

Friend icon Family friends count across the whole household – if your Sim’s spouse befriends the neighbours, those friends count towards your Sim’s promotion too. Multi-Sim households have a real advantage here.
⚠️ Miss work two days in a row and you’re fired. If you rejoin the same career, you start back at level 1. Miss one day and you’ll get a warning – but no demotion. Schedule your skill-building days carefully around the carpool.

At level 10 of most careers, a chance card will eventually appear offering to move your Sim into a completely different career track at a mid-level position. This isn’t optional if the card fires – your Sim switches automatically. The transfer destinations form a loop connecting all careers. See the Career Transfer Loop section below for the full map.

Superstar

Fame (Superstar)

A completely different career system

The Fame career from the Superstar expansion doesn’t follow the standard 10-level structure. Instead, fame is tracked by a 5-star Star Power rating that increases or decreases in half-star increments based on your Sim’s performances in Studio Town.

To enter the Fame career, your Sim signs up at the SimCity Talent Agency via the Studio Town tabloid (delivered by Nancy the Paper Girl). There are no set work hours – your Sim travels to Studio Town and performs using fame-related objects to earn money and build their star rating.

⚠️ Fame decays. The talent agency lowers your Sim’s star rating if they don’t visit Studio Town regularly, give poor performances, or have a nervous breakdown. Miss five consecutive days and your Sim gets dropped entirely.

ℹ️ The Fame career does not participate in the level 10 career transfer loop. It uses Star Power (your personal friends’ combined fame level) instead of family friends for progression. If you have Makin’ Magic installed, the “Price of Fame” charm instantly grants 4.5 fame stars.

Career Transfer Loop

Where each career sends you at level 10

When your Sim reaches the top of their career (level 10), a chance card will eventually appear that moves them into a different career track at a mid-level position. This happens automatically – your Sim can't decline. The transfers form three separate loops.

Tips & Strategy

Best starting career for money
Military pays §250 on day one – the highest entry salary in the game. It’s also one of the easiest to climb (only 8 friends needed for General). Use it to fund your house early, then switch tracks later if the low ceiling bothers you.
Highest-paying career overall
Hacker tops out at §1,550 per day – the highest in the game. Among base game careers, Entertainment (§1,400) and Pro Athlete (§1,300) are the runners-up.
Use a second Sim for friend-farming
Since promotions count family friends, have one Sim focus on their career while the other stays home greeting walk-bys and building friendships. The socialiser’s friends count for both of them.
Mood is everything
Your Sim needs to be in a good mood when the carpool arrives – even if skills and friends are maxed, a bad mood blocks the promotion. Plan skill-building around meals and fun breaks, not marathon sessions.
No career cheat exists
Unlike later Sims games, there is no cheat to force a promotion in The Sims 1. The only shortcut is the move_objects mood reset trick – see the Cheats page for details.
Plan around the career transfer
At level 10, you’ll eventually be forced into a different career. Check the transfer loop to see where you’ll end up – and whether the skills you’ve been building will still be useful in the new track.

QoL mods that affect careers

These mods from the Must-Have Mods page can make career progression easier or remove restrictions entirely.

Stop friendship decay
Normally relationship points decrease by 2 every day at 4pm. Corylea’s Eliminate Relationship Decay hack stops this entirely – friends stay friends, enemies stay enemies. Makes maintaining the high friend counts for top-level promotions far more manageable.
Remove friend requirements for careers
iamtherad’s No Friends Needed for Careers removes the family friends requirement from all career promotions. Your Sim can climb to level 10 on skills and mood alone – no socialising needed.
Change the carpool timing
Corylea’s Two-Hour Carpool Warning changes the carpool pop-up to appear two hours before it arrives instead of one. Gives you more time to get your Sim’s mood topped up before work.
Stop forced career change at level 10
The level 10 career transfer chance card fires automatically and can’t be declined. If you want your Sim to stay in their career at the top, look for a career transfer blocker mod – check simblr.cc and mod download sites for the latest options.
